![]() Most centipedes will subdue and eat other invertebrates, while others can attack and kill small mammals, bats, and amphibians! There are approximately 3500 identified species of centipede, but only 15 (less than 0.5%) is thought to be clinically significant in regards to patient discomfort, morbidity, and mortality. The earliest fossil records of centipedes in their current form have been dated to over 400 million years ago, which has allowed them to develop into very effective predators. Their fangs are a pair of modified legs called forcipules which contain venomous glands. They possess segmented bodies consisting of 15 to almost 200 segments with one pair of legs per segment. ![]() Centipedes are predatory venomous arthropods.
